The Brittany is a medium-sized and active dog that stands about 17-21 inches at the shoulder and typically weigh 30-40 lbs. The Brittany is an athlete built to run, and its body should look as though it fits this bill. The coat of a Brittany is dense and flat or wavy, but not curly. Coat color can be orange and white, or liver and white, either can be in a clear or roan pattern. The tail of the Brittany is usually around 4 inches long, either naturally or artificially docked. A well-bred Brittany should be active, eager to please, and friendly.

History:

There is a lot of speculation about the past of the Brittany. It is believed to have mainly developed in the French province of Brittany. The breed was originally labeled as a spaniel, but in 1983 the name was modified to just ""Brittany."" The main difference of the Brittany compared to other spaniels is that the Brittany ""points"" birds, whereas the spaniels ""flush"" birds.
The Brittany was designed and bred as an upland bird hunter. When it scents its prey it moves in close and freezes into a point, which ideally causes the game bird(s) to freeze as well. The hunter then moves in and flushes the birds into flight where they can be shot at. The Brittany is expected to retrieve any birds that have been knocked down.

Fun things to do:

The Brittany is a good upland bird hunter who freezes on point when it finds a bird. This dog is a good choice for the upland hunter who wishes to include their dog in the family as well. There are many competitions Britts do well in; such as, hunting tests and trials for pointing breeds. Though not as popular with show people as with field people, some owners compete with their dogs in the show ring. Obedience and agility are also events at which Brittanies excel. These dogs enjoy being active with their families, and love to run, so they make very good companions for joggers and runners. Some also enjoy swimming when the water is warm.

What we like about this breed:

Their eagerness to please allows the Brittany to respond to fair and gentle training fairly easily. Overall, Brittanies do well with children, strangers, and other dogs and proper socialization greatly increases these positive tendencies. Plus, they are a good size for many families, neither being too large nor too small.
This breed will thrive in a household where it can get a lot of exercise, attention, and training. Well-bred and well-taken care of Brittanies are happy, alert dogs which are neither aggressive nor shy. They are a good dog for a family with active children.

Health Risks:

As with many breeds, hip dysplasia is a concern. Both parents of your pup should be checked and cleared. Brittanies are susceptible to glaucoma, and to a lesser extent spinal paralysis. In general, this breed has very few health problems.

Things to watch out for with this breed:

The Brittany is an active dog that needs exercise and other stimuli such as training. Lacking these, this breed may develop destructive or other unwanted behaviors. Besides walks, this breed will be much happier and healthier if it can get a good off-leash run on a consistent basis. Walking on a leash, alone, is not sufficient exercise for this breed. Brittanies need to run. You will need to run or jog with your Brittany daily, or find a suitable off-leash dog area where your Brittany can safely run off-leash. If you have a large yard and active children who enjoy playing with a dog, this can provide terrific exercise for your Brittany as well.
The longer coat of this breed requires more attention than short-haired breeds, but not more than other breeds with similar coats. This breed has a tendency to be distracted easily and may roam off, even in the owner's presence. A close eye should be kept on your Brit when it is outdoors and off leash.

The Boxer loves lots of walks, but should be fenced or leashed at all times. In addition, never wrestle or play tug-of-war with your pet, as this dog can become aggressive due to its dog-fighting instinct.

What we like about this breed:

The Boxer is usually a very good-natured breed whose facial expressions are indicative of its emotions. This dog likes to participate in games and activities, and can be friendly with strangers. In addition, this energetic pooch bonds well with the entire family, is good with children, and makes an excellent watchdog. With all its energy, this dog requires an active owner, so put those walking shoes on!

Health Risks:

Some health issues to watch out for in the Boxer include tumors, digestive problems, heart disease, corneal ulcers, and bloat. In addition, this dog is very sensitive to hot and cold conditions, and proper care should be taken as needed to a maintain a pleasant environment for your pooch.

Things to watch out for with this breed:

The Boxer can be aggressive with strange dogs, and its strength and stubbornness can make it a difficult breed to train correctly. The dog's history as a dogfighter and bullbaiter doesn't make it a good companion for the owner who likes to play tug-of-war or wrestling. Originated in Belgium. The name literally means Cattle Driver from Flanders. It was a farm dog that herded cattle and pulled milk carts. This breed prefers to be outside where they can run and play freely. However, do not let them "run free" where they could easily become distracted/lost/killed.

What we like about this breed:

They are a laid back companion who love calm attention, and are perfect for the mellower calmer owner. Also, this breed is an intelligent dog who responds well to obedience training.

Health Risks:

Susceptible to hip dysplasia and bloat.

Things to watch out for with this breed:

People easily fall into buying this dog because of appearance. They require a tremendous amount of grooming and care. Bouvs also love to play and splash in water and mud which makes them excellent dirt transporters. Also, the dog is one of the more odorous breeds, from flatulence to coat smells, the Bouv can produce unpleasant odors. They can be expensive to maintain, for example, purchasing the dog itself, feeding it, and providing medical care.

Misc:

Large working dog who may become aggressive or dominant if not purchased from a proper breeder.

Playful and high-spirited, they love to play games and especially like to chase any kind of ball. They are friendly, spirited companions that love to go for walks with you.

What we like about this breed:

Boston Terriers are easy to live with and can love apartment life or large open country. Boston Terriers are easy to train and want to please their owners. They like to live in people-houses because they can't stand temperature variations.
They are good watchdogs who like a lot of activity, and typically bond to the entire family. In general, they are quite good with children and other pets with whom they are familiar. Those who own Boston Terriers often say that they would own no other breed.

Health Risks:

Hypothyroidism can be a problem, but can be treated with medication. Juvenile cataracts can also occur between 8 and 12 months of age. Also, because of their shortened nasal passages, some dogs can be more prone to allergy or sinus problems than the average dog. But, in general, Boston Terriers are free of most health problems.

Things to watch out for with this breed:

These dogs don't handle temperature variation very well, so they must have sweaters and possibly booties on in the winter. They also tend to snore. In some Boston's you'll have to watch the diet carefully to avoid a lot of gas or chronic intermittent diarrhea. Some are aggressive with other dogs and some can be stubborn.

Although they may appear fragile, this breed is actually rugged and tough. The Borzoi is a tall lean dog that resembles a Greyhound with long hair. Their coat can vary from long and silky to coarse and curly. All colors and patterns are acceptable, but white with spots is most common. This breed is slow to mature.

History:

Comes from Czarist Russia where he was owned by the aristocracy who used the dog to hunt. The Borzoi ran down wolves and other prey into open terrain while the humans followed on horseback. He has been used in America to run down coyotes but is primarily a companion.

Fun things to do:

Borzois love to run and play, but not necessarily play games like fetch. They tend to fetch and not give the object back.
The dog sport of lure coursing can be very rewarding for both Borzoi owner and dog. This is where a rag or plastic bag is dragged along the ground by a cable running at high speed. Speed is the name of the game, and the fastest dog wins. Other activities include Obedience, NOTRA Amateur Racing, Straight Racing, and Glass Unicorn Contests.

What we like about this breed:

The Borzoi is a gentle and loving companion, and a well behaved member of the household. This dog can be shy or seem aloof; proper puppy socialization can prevent these types of problems. They can be good with children if introduced to them properly, or if they live with kids. Both dog and child should be watched over during times of interaction, some individuals shy away from loud and rough play.
They generally enjoy the company of other large dogs and they are intelligent. Borzoi's can learn quickly but also bore quickly in the repetition of competition. As adults, they are generally a very quiet and calm breed in the house. The Borzoi does not give off a very "doggy" odor like many other breeds.

Health Risks:

Generally healthy, but the two biggest concerns are bone cancer and bloat/torsion. This breed sometimes experiences problems with progressive retinal atrophy, cardiomyopathy, and hypothyroidism.

Things to watch out for with this breed:

This breed loves to run and chase, which can mean hazardous conditions for small pets and wildlife. If startled or hurt, this breed will sometimes lash out in defense. This is a major concern around children, especially for those Borzois who do not live with children. Due to their inherent nature to run and chase, this is one breed who can never be trusted off leash in areas where traffic occurs. Although very intelligent, this is a breed who gets bored easily and can be difficult to train.

Misc:

The temperament of the Borzoi can range widely from individual to individual. Carefully choosing a pup from a litter whose parents exhibit temperament qualities you like will improve the chances that you receive a dog with those same qualities.

Bored Border Collies are destructive Border Collies. When confined or left alone, they will chew destructively and bark excessively.

History:

Originated in the border country between Scotland and England. Border Collie is a very old breed, dating back to 1570. It has been known as the Working Collie, Old-Fashioned Collie, Farm Collie and the English Collie. They were named after the Colley Sheep. They have Pointer/Setter genes which may have produced their famous "eye"--the hypnotic stare as they crouch low and creep up on whatever they are herding.

Fun things to do:

Keep in mind they are VERY active. Border Collies always want to be doing something. They are very intelligent and excel in obedience and agility work.
Love to play fetch and chase games, and won't tire as fast as you. When playing, make it hard for the Border Collie to find the ball/stick/etc. This makes it more fun the dog. They also enjoy games like flyball, Frisbee, tracking exercises, and of course herding. Border Collies also like to swim, if they are encouraged to do so at a young age.

What we like about this breed:

This breed is very capable of understanding obedience work. Also, Border Collies enjoy activity with the owner, especially if it means they get to be outdoors. They thrive on attention, are very affectionate and are people-oriented.
Comments about this breed often describe it's admirable working style, high energy, stamina and constant desire to work above all else. They are "heading" dogs rather than "heelers".
Bred for endurance, can run for miles at a time. They will herd almost anything including livestock, birds, cats, children, bugs, lawn mowers, vacuum cleaners, brooms...anything that moves.

Health Risks:

About 25% of Border Collies in the US have some degree of disorder such as hip dysplasia, eye problems and epilepsy. They can also be susceptible to osteochondritis desicans, PRA, Collie Eye Anomaly, Canaine Ceroid Lipfuscinosis, Deafness, Hyperthermia, sensitivity to anesthetics.

Things to watch out for with this breed:

They can be slow to mature and can turn into real nuisances if not properly trained or socialized. Due to their herding instincts, they will chase or herd anything...even cars. It is important to be watchful and not let them get onto roads.
Must be supervised around children.
They don't make reliable guard dogs. They may bark and act protective of their families, but would prefer to herd.

Misc:

Should be accustomed to people at an early age, if not they can become timid and shy. This is not a breed for the casual owner. They need a lot of time and devotion from their human companions.

Description:

The Bichon Frise is a white dog with black nose, halos and eye rims. They have a fluffy white coat (like a powder puff) that needs a lot of grooming. They are show dogs with friendly, out-going personalities.

History:

This breed originated on the Canary Island of Tenerife in the Mediterranean. They have been a distinct breed since about 1400. The dog was a trade item among Spanish sailors, a favorite of French and Italian nobility, a street dog, organ grinder's dog, and a circus dog. Eventually the French took control of the dog and added the word Frise to his name. (Frise is French for a curly and loopy fabric). Today the Bichon Frise is a very popular companion dog.

Fun things to do:

Bichon Frise dogs enjoy to be active, and play with human companions. They are very friendly, charming, affectionate dogs, and make great walking companions. They're also very good at agility events and are shown in conformation competitions.

What we like about this breed:

A friendly, affectionate dog. This breed is good with children, as they play gently. The Bichon Frise is good with other pets in their environment. But, of course, there is some variation depending on the other pets' personalities.
The Bichon Frise are friendly and loving companions who adjust very quickly to new surroundings. They love to be the center of attention. They have a lively personality and are easy to train -- other than housetraining, which can sometimes take a while. They are generally healthy, and can live in a small space. This is an ideal breed for those living in smaller housing environment and fine for novice owners.

Health Risks:

Bichon Frise dogs are susceptible to some skin conditions and ear infections that should be watched for cataracts, other eye problems are not uncommon. Overall, this breed usually has few health problems.

Things to watch out for with this breed:

The Bichon Frise breed requires daily combing to prevent matting of fur. Also, regular grooming, either by yourself or a professional must be done. This breed can also be difficult to house train. Watch out for pet store pups, it is best to find a quality and reputable breeder.

Misc:

All Bichon Frises are pets, but not all are pets as well as showdogs. Since the Bichon Frise is a non-shedding dog, it makes a good companion for people with allergies.
Do not buy this breed from a pet store--it's best to purchase from a reputable breeder. Always make sure that you can see at least one parent and that you like the disposition of that parent. This will be a good indicator of what the pups may be like.

History:

The ancestry of the Bernese Mountain Dog dates to the ancient Roman Legion introduction of the mastiff-type guard dogs that crossbred with local herding dogs found around Berne, Switzerland. They were one of the four Swiss Mountain Dog breeds to develop and the only one to have a long coat. In the alpine farm operations the Bernese Sennenhund as they are know there, instinctively worked as drovers in herding livestock to and from various mountain pastures, became draft-carting dogs that hauled produce to market, as well as being watch dogs on these hillside farms.

Fun things to do:

Aside from the companion roles in their home environment, many Berners are trained for non-AKC herding events, and in earning titles for draft work sponsored by the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America. Other training titles include tracking, agility, and therapy, as well as show ring exhibition and obedience trials. Local clubs sponsor many social and educational activities for the new to the breed owner and want-to-be Berner owner, and is a great way to learn about their dog from caring, experienced owners.

What we like about this breed:

The Bernese is self-confident and very intelligent making them a quick and willing learner. Training sessions should be short, precise and not pushed. Their loyal bonding requires close companionship of their people. They adapt readily to children that they have been raised with from puppyhood, but should be supervised with other children. They are inclined to be timid or suspicious of strangers and are very able watchdogs not prone to frivolous barking. As a herding dog, they are good with other pets. They're quiet indoors, and more active outdoors, being athletic and playful. Unlike other mastiff-type dogs, they are not inclined to drool.

Health Risks:

As with all giant breeds, they should not be allowed to become overweight at any stage in their major growth period and throughout their adult 9 to 10 year life. Berners are unfortunately prone to various cancers, although responsible breeders are trying to get such tendencies out of the breed. Other common medical concerns and genetic predispositions include hip and elbow dysphasia, and bloat (trapped gas in the stomach which is then prone to twisting on itself). Most breeders would welcome your inquiries and would be willing to share knowledge of their breeding stock. Additional health problems may be accessed through the Berner-Garde database.

Things to watch out for with this breed:

Whether residing in a town or country setting, a fenced yard should be a must, along with appropriate protection from the elements. Berners require daily walks and exercise to keep them properly conditioned. Grooming includes vigorous brushing to control shedding, and will require more frequent brushing during their semi-annual blowing of coat, along with periodic ear cleaning, and nail trimming. Puppy training, early socialization, and beginning obedience training for both the dog and owner are highly recommended.
Make sure you like the disposition of the parents of your Berner pup. Berners are usually reserved around strangers, but veterinarians are starting to see some aggression in a few dogs. Berners are a normally friendly breed and should not display aggressive tendencies. Proper socialization as a young pup is a must to help avoid such tendencies.

History:

Beagles are considered one of the oldest breeds, and came to prominence in the days of King Henry the VII in England. Their exact ancestry is clouded, but it is estimated that they originated in Greece and France. In those days, hunting dogs rode to the fields in baskets on the saddles of horses. Beagles were bred for rabbit hunting and can successfully hunt almost any upland game animal including pheasants.

Fun things to do:

Beagles love to be with their human companions. They thrive on activity. They can tolerate long walks or even running. Because they are hunters by nature, beagles will sniff and track almost anything while outside. It is important to watch your beagle because they tend to loose focus while tracking with their noses to the ground.

What we like about this breed:

These dogs are intelligent and generally content companions. They are fairly clean and don't require frequent baths. In addition, if these dogs are properly socialized, they bond well to family members, and especially to children. Few beagles will act aggressively towards strange people or dogs once introduced, especially when well socialized.
Beagles love to spend time with their family, and are happiest when they can.

Health Risks:

Watch for the following health problems in you Beagle: Cherry eye, glaucoma, cataracts, retinal dysplasia & PRA in the eyes. Epilepsy is fairly prevalent in beagles as well, often times causing seizures. In addition, hypothyroidism (a condition of the thyroid gland causing weight gain, poor coat quality, and reproductive problems) is common in this breed.

Things to watch out for with this breed:

Beagles are inquisitive dogs that are easily distracted by their explorations. They must be watched very carefully if not leashed while outdoors because they roam. Active beagles will "eat themselves to death" so to speak, and it is important to watch your dog for obesity problems. Sometimes hard to train, especially housetrain. Many beagles need constant obedience sessions until they are two years old. Beagles will bark and howl quite a bit, specifically when they are left alone.

Misc:

Beagles may be difficult to train due to their active nature. Beagles cannot concentrate for long periods of time. These dogs, coming in 13 inch and 15 inch heights, have very outgoing personalities.
This breed's hunting style is unique and very effective for hunting rabbits. The beagle will bark when on scent, thus allowing the hunter to keep tabs on where his or her beagle is. The beagle is much too slow to actually catch a rabbit, and the hunter gets his or her chance when the rabbit circles back to its original position of where the dogs flushed it out. Most beagle owners who hunt with their dog(s) take pride in the performance of their beagles, not in the amount of game taken.

This good-natured and peaceful dog is short-legged and relatively heavy for its size. It usually stands just under a foot and a half tall, with a hard coat and loose skin. The Basset Hound is usually some combination of black, white, and/or tan and has long, trademark ears that hand down.

History:

The word Basset comes from the French "bas," meaning "low to the ground." This breed is, in fact, descended from the Bloodhound and old St. Hubert hound. It was admired by William Shakespeare and King Edward VII. Originally bred to hunt game, it still makes the perfect hunting dog for the novice hunter, with its short legs and slower paced run.

Fun things to do:

The Basset Hound was originally bred as a trailing dog, and it will bay loudly when it is on the trail of a rabbit or other, smaller game. Be careful, however, as your Basset may simply wander away because of this instinct to trail. Try a long, leashed walk through wooded areas or open fields for a fun time for you and your pooch. Or, for the novice hunter, this dog makes an erstwhile companion.

What we like about this breed:

The Basset Hound is among the mildest mannered of all breeds. They tend to be peaceful and reliable, good with children and strangers, and able to bond well with an entire family. They make excellent watchdogs, and do fine in the city or large apartment if they are given enough exercise. In addition, this breed gets along well with other animals, and does well with patient obedience training.

Health Risks:

The Basset Hound is an extremely healthy breed, and most health problems that do occur are the result of obesity caused by lack of exercise. A healthy Basset, in other words, is one that is exercised regularly. Some possible genetic health concerns include the following: glaucoma, Von Willebrand's Disease, bloat, Paneosteitis, allergies, and otitis externa.

Things to watch out for with this breed:

Basset Hounds can be difficult to housebreak, and they tend to bay a lot in their sleep. These dogs are also known to howl when left alone for long periods of time. They may wander away from home if not kept leashed or locked-up. In addition, they also tend to drool more than most other breeds. They can be a bit stubborn, and will often clown around when being disobedient.

Misc:

This is a friendly breed, but a born trailer and hunter, so be ready to do some tracking!

The Australian Shepherd, or "little blue dog" as it is often called because of some of the breed's blue Merle color, is a medium-sized dog trained originally as a herder. This breed is attentive and animated, solid and muscular. Its docked or naturally bobbed tale complements its solid physique. His moderate length coat, somewhat coarse, comes in an assortment of four colors: black, blue Merle, red Merle, and red. This dog does best in the suburbs or in the country with an active, experienced owner. The dog is very intelligent, and its instinct to herd can often overpower any desire it may have to obey. Leashes and fenced yards are a must!

History:

While the origin of the Australian Shepherd, or Aussie, is not completely known, the breed is thought to have derived from the Basques people who immigrated to Australia and the United States in the nineteenth century. On the American range, this dog became a dependable herding dog of superior intelligence and a devoted member of the family. These dogs often appear in photographs of the American West taken during the 19th and 20th centuries, and can be seen rounding up sheep and cattle. In the 1950's and 1960's, Jay Sisler introduced Aussies to the American rodeo scene. During the rodeos, Sisler and his dogs would perform tricks for the amazed audiences. It was not until 1991, however, that the American Kennel Club (AKC) adopted this breed. The Aussie became eligible for full competition in the AKC in 1993.

Fun things to do:

The Aussie makes a wonderful companion for an intense Frisbee-throwing session. This dog is also a great herder, and will nip at people's heels to "herd" them. Perhaps the ideal companion for the large family on the go?

What we like about this breed:

The Australian Shepherd is an excellent herding dog, excelling as well in Dogs for the Deaf programs, narcotics detection units, and on search and rescue missions. This dog is easy to train, likes a lot of exercise, is good with children and can be taught to be friendly to strangers. In addition, this breed makes an excellent watchdog, and bonds well to the entire family.

Health Risks:

Some genetic problems in Aussies include malocclusions (faulty bites which may affect a dog's health), juvenile cataracts, Collie Eye Anomaly (symptoms range from choroidal hypoplasia to optic nerve coloboma to retina detachment), cleft palate, epilepsy (not necessarily hereditary), primary glaucoma, homozygous merles (defective double-gene found in some white Aussies), hip dysplasia, Progressive Renal Atrophy (PRA), spina bifida, and iri colobomas (may not be hereditary). In addition, reds and red Merles are susceptible to sunburn.

Things to watch out for with this breed:

Because the Aussie is a herder by nature, and an energetic dog in general, if it is kept confined and not kept busy, it can become prone to destructive chewing. In addition, this dog is highly reflex-responsive, and will scramble away if suddenly touched. Although this is a prized quality for a herd dog so that it can get out of the way of aggressive cattle, it makes for an annoyance inside the home. This dog will also shed a lot, and requires a weekly grooming, lots of exercise and a large home to live in.

Misc:

Leashes and fenced-yards are a must for this dog, whose instinct to herd is often greater than its desire to obey! Also, if you are looking for a family pet, avoid the strict working lines of this breed. The working line of the Aussie breed may be too intense to be a good family pet.

Description:

The Alaskan Malamute is a breed that loves the cold outdoors, and is at home in the country or the suburbs. This dog can be boisterous and energetic, and is best for experienced owners only. However, the Malamute has a high degree of sociability with strangers, and bonds well with children, as well as with the entire family. These dogs love to run, love to work and love to roam. They need a lot of exercise, a sturdy fence, and a lot of room for activity.

History:

The Alaskan Malamute gets its name from a group of native Innuits known as the Mahlemute tribe who used this breed to pull sledges. These people lived mainly in the area surrounding the upper part of the Anvik river in Alaska. These dogs were bred to pull large amounts of weight over very long distances at a steady pace. Although originally found primarily in this region, the gold rush of 1896 created a high demand for these dogs and they become common in other areas. Today, there exists two "kinds" of Malamute: the M'Loot and the Kotzebue. The former tends to be larger and come in a variety of colors, while the latter is always wolf-gray and smaller in size.

Fun things to do:

The Alaskan Malamute is a working breed, and they thrive best when they have something to do. They enjoy a lot of exercise and interaction. While mushing is the best form of exercise for this breed, if you lack the necessary sledge and other equipment, frequent walks, hikes, and playing will do just fine. Since they like to work and have a lot of stamina, they do well with activities such as roller blading and ski-jouring. If you enjoy going for long hikes, buy a dog pack and bring along your Alaskan Malamute, for she will be a reliable, working companion on your adventure.
Be careful of the summer heat; Malamutes and other heavy-coated dogs are intolerant of heat. During the summer, work them only in cooler times of the day, and make sure they have plenty of water.

What we like about this breed:

The Alaskan Malamute is very intelligent and active. Its a very good pet for an active, athletic family. Malamutes are a friendly, affectionate breed as well, but they can be rather independent as well (a bit like cats). They love winter sports, and are great companions for those who enjoy cross-country skiing, ski-touring, or even winter hiking. They are playful and friendly, and if raised with children, enjoy romping and playing with children.

Health Risks:

Some common health problems for the Alaskan Malamute include hip dysplasia, zinc-deficiency skin disorders, bloat, thyroid deficiencies, and achondrodysplasia. The latter is a congenital dwarfism where a puppy, born with a normal head and body, will have short, warped legs. There are also several eye disorders that have been detected in the breed: progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), central progressive atrophy (CPRA), and hemeralopia ("day blindness"). Make sure your breeder has screened her breeding dogs for dysplasia and eye disorders.
This dog does not like heat - its ideal environment is a cold climate. So if you live in a hot climate, don't get a northern breed like a Malamute! During the summer, Malamutes and other wavy-coated dogs can be prone to hot spots, which are red, itchy infected areas of skin. See your veterinarian immediately if you see these develop.

Things to watch out for with this breed:

The Alaskan Malamute is a strong dog that requires time and attention to train properly. Its shedding can prove to be a bit of a problem, as can its howling. This breed has been known to "re-landscape" yards with their incessant digging. They are pack oriented, and do best when they are included with the family in their events. However, other smaller family pets or other dogs may not be the ideal companions for the Malamute, as they might harass or even attack them. Also, Malamutes love to roam and can be excellent escape artists.
Although they affectionate, they are also independent and can be somewhat aloof (a bit like cats). Because they may not care if they please you (even though they'll like you just fine), they can be stubborn about training at times.

The Akita is a calm, very intelligent, easygoing breed. The Akita has a "bear-like" appearance. The dog is adaptable to the city if given enough exercise, and functions best as a hunting or companion dog. This breed also makes a good watchdog as it is territorially suspicious, but it is not necessarily a good dog for protection. In addition, the Akita has a somewhat stubborn attitude, and a reserved demeanor with a protective instinct.

History:

The Akita was originally owned by the imperial aristocracy in the most rugged mountains of Japan, the Akita Prefecture. There, this dog was used for bear hunting and as a guard dog. The breed was actually originally developed by an exiled nobleman who had an ardent interest in dogs. When the dogs became associated with the aristocracy, leashes were used to distinguish the rank and standing of the dog's owner. Each dog was assigned a special caretaker who dressed in ceremonial garb signifying his relationship to the dog and its status in the realm.

Fun things to do:

The Akita needs playing time in the yard or a nice walk. In addition, these dogs respond well to weight pulling and sledding. Many experts debate about the appropriate amount of exercise Akitas need, but a large, fenced yard is an ideal play-space.

What we like about this breed:

The Akita can be good with children if raised with children, and often bonds to the entire family. These dogs are not usually hyperactive and fit well into a sedentary household. However, exercise is important for your dog, and a walk or playing time in the yard will improve the Akita's disposition and health. In addition to these traits, the Akita makes an excellent watchdog, and many talk (i.e. grunt, groan, etc.) to entertain themselves. Akitas will "woo" to greet you!

Health Risks:

Some common health problems associated with the Akita are hip dysplasia, patella problems (bad knees), popping, hocks, and thyroid problems. The Akita also has several potential problems with visibility, including night blindness, and inward rolling lids. Be cautioned that this breed is also sensitive to anesthesia.

Things to watch out for with this breed:

If Akita's are left alone in the yard, an Akita will regress socially and begin exhibiting destructive behavior. The dog requires a good trainer, preferably an experienced owner. It tends to be stubborn, adverse to harsh methods, sensitive and difficult to train. The dog also requires daily attention, and can be aggressive with other pets and other dogs because of its strong prey drive. In addition, Akitas do not like being teased and consider eye contact a challenge. Never let a stranger hug your Akita, or get down to the dog's eye level!

Misc:

A former bear-hunter in Japan, the Akita can make a nice pet if trained by a very experienced owner.

This large breed can be nervous, dignified, or even clownish. Their long, silky coat comes in black, cream, silver, brindle and other solid, exotic patterns. These dogs excel as broken field runners with their characteristic agility and cunning.

History:

This dog is believed to have existed more than 7,000 years ago in the desserts and mountains of present-day Afghanistan. The wealthy nobles and royalty of Afghanistan hunted extensively with these dogs, and the breed takes its name from its geographical origins. These dogs hunted snow leopards, wolves, deer, and gazelle, among others. They hunt with their keen eyesight, commonly designated as a Sighthound breed, and their agility allowed them to cover extremely rugged terrain. The breed came to the U.S. in the 1920's.

Fun things to do:

The Afghan Hound loves to run, and needs plenty of exercise, even in the city. Try several long walks, or a bike ride with a leashed Afghan, if it is trained well, can provide you and your dog with loads of excitement. Finding a large, fenced in area where you Afghan can run freely is ideal, only make sure that your dog will not be able to get out or hurdle the fence and escape!

What we like about this breed:

This breed requires little trimming or clipping, and is very active when indoors. It loves tons of exercise when out of doors, however. This dog is unbelievably fast, with high hip bones for incredible agility and fence-jumping ability, so make sure you keep your pet leased. In addition, this breed gets along well with other dogs and can be trained to be considerate of cats and other small pets, making it an ideal addition to an active family with older, considerate children.

Health Risks:

The most common health problems of the Afghan Hound include hip dysplasia, cataracts, and paralysis. In addition, this breed is sensitive to drugs and caution must be taken when anaesthetizing your dog for its hip dysplasia x-rays. It is recommended that other medications, like flea and tick powders, not be used with this dog because of its sensitivity.

Things to watch out for with this breed:

The Afghan Hound can be a nervous dog, reserved and often timid with strangers. This breed should be watched with smaller pets, however, and requires gentle and patient training. This dog can display its resistance as stubbornness rather than as destructive behavior, so training can become a very trying endeavor. Therefore, this breed is recommended for experienced owners only.

Misc:

These dogs are fast and agile, so high fences and leashes are mandatory! In addition, lots of brushing is required to keep this breed's coat shiny and healthy.
